Cutting Carbon Emissions

The conundrum lies with the need to use energy for such reasons as heating and cooling homes, but this contributes to the carbon problem. There are many personal rewards for energy use such as staying warm during winter blizzards, keeping cool when the sun is sweltering, and being able to see indoors when the sun goes down. By altering a few behaviors to become more energy-efficient, people can enjoy the benefits of energy use while still being cognizant of carbon emissions.

Ways to Work Towards Energy Reduction Rewards

Energy reduction rewards can come in the form of self-satisfaction knowing you're helping the environment or in physical rewards such as reduced energy bills or benefits with energy suppliers for being more green with energy use. Below are a few things to consider that will help work towards whatever energy reduction rewards are best suited for you.

Check for Home Leaks

Check for any leaks in seals that could be allowing air to seep in and out. A house is supposed to be a contained unit where air temperature can be controlled. If there are multiple leaks, this makes it harder on the thermostat to regulate the temperature causing the heater or air conditioner to work more than it should. Be sure to check for leaks around doors and windows as well as any place that additions to a home have been added and the original foundation or framing was dismantled. Cracks and breaks in seals are likely to appear first in such locations. Ensuring the house is properly sealed and insulated could reduce heating and cooling bills by 20%.

Check the Thermostat

Break out the blankets instead of dialing up the heat. Turn the thermostat down a few notches in the winter to reduce carbon emissions from heat. A two-degree drop can reduce emissions by 6%, which is roughly 420 pounds of carbon per home. A minute drop can contribute to great rewards for energy use.

Check Insulation

In addition to turning down the thermostat, invest in proper insulation for walls and ceilings. If all cracks are sealed, insulation can cut down on the need to heat the house reducing energy bills by 20-30%. Insulation helps contain the heat that is produced, cutting carbon emissions by 140 to 2100 pounds per year.

Check Home Décor

Two things can help contribute to managing house temperature: foliage and paint color. Foliage such as shade trees can help shade the house from the sun's rays in times of warm weather, reducing how much the air conditioner might have to work. The same goes for paint. Depending on the climate, lighter pastels are better at deflecting the sun's rays and keeping the house cooler, while darker colors are more useful in absorbing the sun's rays to keep a house warmer. Either way, the strategic use of foliage and paint in climates can save 2.4 tons of carbon emissions per year. The trees also help take some of the carbon out of the air.

No matter what rewards for energy use you are looking for, personal or environmental, careful attention to how energy is used and managed in the home can result in maximum energy reduction rewards for all involved. Check for leaks, monitor the thermostat, install insulation, and use appropriate décor to curb unnecessary carbon emissions.

3 Reasons Why Your Business Can't Do Without Renewable Energy

Businesses and individuals around the world are expected to spend $2.9 billion on renewable energy by 2025. That is a far cry from 150 years ago when 90% of the country's energy needs were satisfied purely by wood sources.

Sustainable power is a topic that continues to receive much attention as the plight of our planet comes into focus. At the same time, power costs for businesses keep spiraling upwards and putting pressure on the profit margins. Consequently, corporations are turning to the existing renewable energy types as a means of acquiring cost friendlier power.

The following are some meaningful benefits you can realize by adopting renewable energy today.

1. Lower Energy Bills

Every business exists to be an efficient entity and as such, keeping the energy bills as low as possible is always a welcome (and sometimes mission-critical) initiative. Using green energy, firms can garner attractive energy savings by utilizing the most suitable option out of the existing renewable energy types today.

Wind turbines utilize freely available wind power to convert the kinetic energy available in the wind into mechanical power. The mechanical power then gets converted to electricity by the use of a generator.

For businesses located near water bodies, hydroelectric power is the most convenient of the existing renewable energy types for generating cheaper electricity. All such a firm has to do is to store the water, and as the need dictates, run it through angled pipes. These pipes increase the speed at which the water flows, ultimately powering a generator that then produces the electricity.

Solar power is the most popular form of green energy, and for many enterprises, also the most flexible option. By using solar panels, you can turn the sun's energy into thermal or electrical energy.

Geothermal power is a fast-growing source of green energy that companies in suitable areas can tap to lower their power costs. Geothermal stations convert the energy stored in the underground heated water into electricity for company use.

2. Reliable Operations

Whenever there is a power outage, your company encounters loses due to unrealized productivity. Many companies are now pursuing a mixed electricity generation model in a bid to cut down on their annual downtimes and the resultant loss.

These companies rely on the grid to help them meet their power needs while co-generating at the same time. Thus, should the electricity supplier experience an outage the business can immediately switch to the most suitable of the available renewable energy types and stabilize operations.

3. Boost Your Reputation

Today's business environment includes customers who pay attention to your company's values. One issue that is increasingly growing in popularity in the business world is sustainability. When people buy items today, they want to know that they are supporting a firm that is working to conserve the planet and not plunder it.

According to a 52-week Nielsen study on consumer goods purchases, brands with sustainable products sold 3% more. Such data has not gone unnoticed by investors as they seek to move with market sentiment.

An increasing number of financiers are now looking at how companies plan to deliver value on the 'triple bottom line' approach. The triple bottom line approach involves your financial returns, your firm's social contribution, and its environmental conservation efforts.

Using green energy in your operations is a meaningful way to differentiate your products and services in the market which can drive or sustain your sales. In an age where your marketplace is interconnected, it pays to have customers advocate for your brand due to your adoption of green energy which can have a positive lift on your returns.

Furthermore, if you plan to embark on any fundraising activities, investors will count your reputation as a firm that uses green energy as a plus during negotiations.

Tap into the Benefits of Renewable Energy

Concern for the planet's survival and the ever-rising traditional power prices are swirling to create the perfect storm for businesses. Thus, companies are turning to present-day renewable energy types as a way to get cost-effective electricity while also gaining a reputation for being sustainable.

How Switching Your Residential Energy Provider Can Save You Energy

Efficiency is an important consideration for every type of homeowner. Whether you have a small family home or a larger property with multiple buildings, it is wise to understand just how much you might be able to save on energy costs by switching to a residential energy provider that understands the quality of sustainable energy systems. But even if you are aware of the benefits of switching, you may have a tough time taking the first steps. What do I need to know about renewable energy before switching my provider?

While you certainly do not need to be an expert on the subject of renewable energy, it is helpful to get a basic understanding of the current state of the industry. As a matter of fact, according to recent research data, more than half of the United States' renewable energy is used for producing electricity. About 13% of electricity generation in the United States in the year 2015 was from renewable energy sources. When you consider these enormous figures, it is clear that the trend toward green energy and residential energy providers that specialize in renewable energy will only continue to grow. With a market that has a higher demand for green energy services, this means that you benefit as a consumer. However, it also means that you need to be that much more careful when you choose a residential energy provider.

To reduce your energy use, it helps to consider the quality of your current equipment. Everything from light bulbs to water heaters can be a huge source of energy waste. When you work alongside a reputable energy provider who understands the importance of saving energy, they will help you to perform a detailed audit of your current setup so that you can make the upgrades that will help you conserve energy over time. Even if some of the installation costs seem large upfront, you have to remember that they pay for themselves over time in the form of conserved energy. Even with a few simple upgrades, you'll be surprised just how much lower your monthly utility bill becomes.

How do I find the right residential energy provider?

First and foremost, you should always find a provider that understands the current best practices of the different types of sustainable energy. You should also make sure that the supplier you end up choosing has all the basic indicators of quality. This means checking to see that they have the necessary certifications and qualifications to deliver high quality, dependable energy service. This information can usually be easily obtained with a quick web search, a simple phone call, or an in-person conversation with a representative of the residential energy provider.

Finally, it might be a good idea to search around for reviews and recommendations from trusted peers, colleagues, and other members of your community. A lot of the time if a company has a list of strong, positive reviews from previous customers then that is typically a good sign that they are well worth your time, money, and resources. If not, then you can move on to finding a company that values its customer service approach a little more, as there many available to you in today's market.

If you are looking to save energy and money while also doing your part to contribute to environmental sustainability then take the first step today to find a residential energy provider who understands the growing industry of renewable energy. If you are having trouble finding the right provider, do not hesitate to reach out and get in touch with us today. Simple Tips to Reduce Energy Consumption and Live a More Sustainable Life

Simple Tips to Reduce Energy Consumption and Live a More Sustainable Life

Energy usage is a major concern for homeowners of all kinds. Thankfully, with the abundant knowledge available to consumers today, there are many steps you can take to reduce your energy use. It doesn't hurt to know that making these positive changes also decrease your monthly utility bills, and contribute to a more sustainable, environmentally friendly world.

Change Your Light Bulbs
Though it may seem obvious, changing your light bulbs is perhaps the quickest way to see a measurable reduction in your energy consumption. Older forms of outdated light bulb styles not only give off excess heat, but they also waste energy. When you have lots of these older bulb styles, they can quickly add up to larger energy loss throughout your home. While seeing what options you have with your electricity company can certainly help you to reduce energy usage, making some simple adjustments such as upgrading your light bulbs represents one of the best ways to save energy in your home.

For example, just changing the types of light bulbs that you use around the house can have quite a dramatic effect on your overall energy usage. You can reduce energy use from about a third to as much as 80%. By installing today's increasing number of energy-efficient halogen incandescents, CFLs and LEDs, you can expect to see a positive adjustment on your next monthly utility bill.

Ask Your Electricity Company About Energy Use Rewards
Most people aren't aware that their electricity company just might have some special rewards awaiting those who are committed to reducing their environmental footprint. As a matter of fact, many energy providers have comprehensive programs for checking your weekly usage and comparing it to averages in your area. It's always worthwhile to look around your electricity company's website or make a call to see if they offer rewards and incentives for employees who reduce their energy use.
Look Into Green Energy Services
The market for green energy is growing. More and more people are recognizing the power of solar and wind energy services to create energy that is more sustainable, and healthy for the environment. Traditional energy services use fossil fuels that have some negative consequences on the planet. For one, they require damaging extraction processes to make them available to consumers. Fossil fuels also emit greenhouse gas, which causes erosion to the ozone layer, in turn contributing to global warming. To ensure you are not complicit in these harmful processes, it's wise to ask your electricity company about the availability of green energy services such as wind and solar.

Conserving energy around your home is a process that requires constant mindfulness. Choosing the right electricity company is a great first step, but there is so much you can do throughout your everyday life. By informing yourself on the current state of renewable energy and taking the small, everyday steps needed to reduce your energy use, you will soon find that you are on your way to living a more sustainable lifestyle.
