8 Tips on How to Cut Down Your Energy Bills

8 Tips on How to Cut Down Your Energy Bills

Is your water heating bill stressing you out too much? Energy is a costly expenditure for any home, as 14% to 25% of the energy consumed in most homes go into water heating.

A leaky faucet, a malfunctioning thermostat, or a poorly insulated tank may look like something little. But such minor problems may lead to a marked increase in your energy bills. Here are some money-saving tips, which can help you in correcting such problems and in lowering your energy bills:

Always Insulate Your Water Tank

Non-insulated water tanks make your heated water lose heat and it makes the heat control unit turn on more often. By insulating the storage tank, you'll save the electricity you could have spent heating the water. Always be careful not to cover important components such as the thermostat when insulating your storage tank. If you don't know how to do the insulation, you can always seek the services of a plumber to avoid damaging any of your heating units and connecting plumbing pipes and fixtures.

Lower Your Water Temperature Level

You should keep your thermostat at the right temperature level to avoid using too much energy and save on energy costs. Most thermostat makers have 140°F as the highest heating level. But 120°F is enough for home heating, and you don't have to set the heating level above 120°F.

Insulate Your Pipes

Apart from insulating your water storage tank, you should also insulate the first 6 feet of your cold and hot water pipes, which gets connected to your heating unit. The pipe insulation prevents heat loss and saves money.

Install Heat Traps

Heating unit heat traps permit cold water to get into the tank while preventing unwanted convection from flowing out of the unit. Many heating units have heat traps, but if your unit is more than 10 years old you should consider replacing it or at least installing new heat traps.

Install New Energy-Efficient Appliances

If your washing machine or dishwasher is over a decade old you should consider buying a new one that is more energy-efficient. You may as well consider buying a new water heating system or unit. If the new one is more efficient, you're likely to save more electricity and money.

Install a Timer

Traditional heaters with no timer never stop running until the water temperature has reached the right level. This is sometimes wasteful because there might be no one using hot water at the moment. You should install a timer that will switch off the heating system to prevent heat loss and help in energy conservation.

Don't Let Your Water Run

It's ideal to always close the faucet or your running taps once you step out of the shower. This will prevent the hot running water from going to waste. The same applies to other appliances that you use -- you should not let them run for long because they'll also lead to more energy wastage.

Reduce the Time You Spend In the Shower

The more time you spend in the shower, the more water you use. This implies that you'll also spend more on your energy bills. Taking shorter showers can help you save energy and money.

You should not throw your money down the drain by paying for high energy bills resulting from poor insulation, energy-inefficient appliances, and non-insulated pipes. Follow these energy conservation tips set up above and conserve energy by paying lower bills.
